STEPHEN
MAFFIN
New Work 2007
Stephen Maffin has always been drawn to the figure, the face in particular, and is fascinated by texture and material. His art is a product of process and discovery, created in a medium he designed in order to explore both the architecture and accident invoked in the act of representation, exploiting the connection between texture and feeling. Using a blend of plasters on burlap, he seals and then cracks the plaster to produce outlines of an image. He then applies washes of paint until achieving the final image.
