Artist’s Statement
My work is an exploration into the visual possibilities of presenting the familiar in a new, even uncanny, light. The selective creative process and inclusion of revealing, yet unexpected allegorical references conjure an alchemy by which the banal is rendered valuable. In apparent deliberate rejection of Modern Abstraction (i.e. the simultaneous depiction of multiple physical vantage points), my traditional oil glaze paintings and watercolours, executed in a Magic Realist manner, nevertheless reveal their subjects through multiple conceptual viewpoints. Their execution is the result of prolonged observation and careful application of design, colour structure and art theory in order to facilitate clear communication of ideas or emotions through the physical medium. Through lush renderings, my work seeks to invite a dialogue between artist and viewer that will result in an initial joy of discovery followed by lingering emotional unease and reflection.
