Donna McCullough bases this series from her vivid recollections of family
gatherings in the 50's and 60's: to her, the women inevitably ended
up in the kitchen cooking, talking and washing dishes. Using fashion,
McCullough now celebrates the women who lived in those decades when
society imposed strict domestic regulations. Through her artwork she
explores these outgrown notions of gender roles and honors the women
who filled them.

The
piece "Memory Garden" is the first in a new series by McCullough
that addresses issues of mourning and loss. The rusted, weathered nature
of the steel and the twining, leafing vines lends a sense of enduring
age and nostalgia to the piece; illustrating how family and friends
who have passed on continue to live in our memories and grow within
us as we grow.

In this series of
work entitled, Drill Team Girls, thematic elements are two-fold.
The imitation of cheerleading outfits constructed from vintage gas and
oil cans simultaneously comments on both the struggle of popularity
and angst among young women as well as our society's reliance on oil
and how governmental units encourage, or cheer, that dependency.
