Washington, DC – No Question. Stephen Hansen’s clever, ironic, distilled, sculpted social observations in paper mache, stone, steel, copper, hydrocal and other materials will make you laugh whether you see them once or a thousand times. The gifted, self-taught artist refers to himself as a “hapless tourist, making snapshots of whatever strikes my fancy,” and what this modern-day Daumier creates is art that is intellectually accessible and aesthetically seductive.
Stylistically, Hansen’s work is lifelike rather than realistic, a choice he made out of a desire to represent ideas rather than individuals. He makes sculpture, schemed to attract and communicate. And it does. Today, the artist’s work is held in public and corporate collections, including the National Association of Homebuilders; Quebec’s Musee de Civilization; the Museum of New Mexico; Checker Motors; AES; Amalgamated Bank; Herman Miller, Inc. in four countries; Hughes Aircraft; Jyukano Research Institute in Japan; the touring “Tools as Art” Hechinger Collection, and too many others to mention. Returning to Zenith Gallery for the umpteenth time in almost 30 years, Hansen has shown his artwork in a myriad of galleries from Colorado to New Mexico and states in between.
