Stars & Stripes: Zenith Salutes the Flag! shall explore the development of themes and imagery related to the iconic image of the American flag. As you will see, our artists have incorporated this motif into a wide variety of works, created from a range of materials including: paint, metal, mesh, neon, wood, found object, and canvas. The resulting art explores themes that touch upon identity and self-expression; pride and community; personal and communal freedoms; the philosophy and politics of contemporary American life; not to mention consumerism, censorship, and conflict. We believe you will leave this exhibit feeling both a profound sense of pleasure, having viewing some incredible works of art, and thoughtful contemplation, as you are considering all the messages and themes that our artists evoke. So, please join us in celebrating the expressive mixed media works by Fabiano Amin, the charming Impressionistic paintings of Richard Fitzhugh, the exciting mixed media and neon of Philip Hazard, the intense metal sculptures of Dalya Luttwak, the delightful mixed media dress sculptures of Donna McCullough, the inspiring wood and neon sculptures of Margery Goldberg, the skillful, found object, wall-based assemblages of Gavin Sewell, the phenomenal Realism paintings of Bradley Stevens, the elegantly crafted mosaics of Jennifer Wagner, the powerful mixed media quilt paintings of Curtis Woody, and the utterly mind-blowing neon work by Mary Voytek.
This exhibit was compiled in conjuncture with the release of the book “Stars & Stripes: The American Flag in Contemporary Art” compiled by E. Ashley Rooney and Stephanie Standish, and published by Schiffer Publishing Company. Rooney has been selectively writing about schools of art, specific themes within contemporary art, artists and artwork from various regions of the United States, and a wide range of other artistic subjects such as architecture. In her newest effort, Ms. Rooney has turned her focus to artwork depicting and inspired by the American flag. We are pleased to announce that Ms. Rooney will be present for our opening, and will be available to sign books and answer questions about this fascinating publication.
“This new book on flags certainly touches a chord, there has never been a book that has such provocative images of the American Flag. I believe people all across the country will find this a must have when compiling a library of books on the United States. You can imagine hearing John Philip Sousa’s music in the background” Margery Goldberg, testimonial for “Stars and Stripes: The American Flag in Contemporary Art”
