We the People: Protesting for a Perfect Union is intended to show our nations citizens, in photographic print form, exercising their First Amendment right of freedom of assembly and voicing their principles. From the first day of our current President taking office, there have been many demonstrations. The first and largest was the Women’s March on Washington. That march is what inspired me to begin and continue to photograph the demonstrations since the 45th President took office. He is not the first President to have demonstrations during their presidency. What makes this presidency and time in our culture different –and what caused me to want to document the demonstrators, pro and con-- is the large number of demonstrations that have taken place in such a compressed time. The volume of people at some of the demonstrations also intrigued me. I am excited to be doing this work, as it is allowing me to explore the edges of my own comfort- not only documenting gatherings that are in alignment with my own political perspective, but bringing a journalistic eye to gatherings of other kinds, with equally passionate voices, and equally strong political beliefs. This project is truly a celebration of the right to express our opinions, to gather and protest.
